On the afternoon of August 19, during a Chinese radio program broadcast by NHK International Radio, a Chinese male employee who had worked at NHK for 22 years suddenly spoke off the script and announced in Chinese: “Diaoyu Islands are Chinese territory”, sparking heated discussions in China and Japan.

When the employee was broadcasting the relevant news, he pronounced the so-called “Senkaku Islands” in the original news manuscript as “Diaoyu Islands” and said that “Diaoyu Islands are Chinese territory”. The above broadcast content was broadcast in real time in its entirety, with a total duration of about 20 seconds.

Subsequent reports showed that the man’s complete speech included “Don’t forget the Nanjing Massacre, don’t forget the comfort women, don’t forget Unit 731” and other content.

NHK said that the Chinese employee in his 40s was an external employee hired by NHK’s subordinate institutions and had been engaged in Chinese broadcasting work at NHK since 2002. At present, the relevant institutions have decided to terminate the contract with him.

The spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly stated that the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islands are China’s inherent territory and the surrounding waters are under China’s jurisdiction.
