How does the light of science and technology illuminate online civilization?

On August 27, the “Future Night – Let the Light of Technology Illuminate Network Civilization” online interactive guidance event was held in Chengdu. The event focused on the theme of “Technology + Youth” and invited representatives from all walks of life and well-known Internet figures to express the times and China’s expression of network civilization construction.

Network civilization is a new form of civilization that has emerged with the development of the Internet, and it is also an important symbol of the progress of modern social civilization. How to use technology to promote the development of network civilization and create a clearer, more harmonious and orderly network environment? To this end, the reporter interviewed the guests who shared in the “Future Night” to listen to their insights.

The development of the Internet involves the application of new technologies and new achievements. “In the ‘Future Night’, I shared the achievements of terahertz communication technology.” Chen Zhi, professor of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and deputy director of the National Key Laboratory of Communication Anti-interference, said that this high-speed communication technology broke into people’s vision during the 2023 Chengdu Universiade, and the transmission rate can reach 80 Gbit per second. The wonderful pictures of the competition site can be presented to the global audience as if they were there, “moving with people”, and every detail is visible.

Terahertz waves, which have a large amount of absolute bandwidth resources, have a wide range of application potential in the field of communications. Chen Zhi introduced that “previous mobile communications mainly solved the problem of basic calls. Now 4G and 5G can support the use of various software, and 6G can complete more functions required in life and work. We can imagine this.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of China’s full-function access to the international Internet. In Chengdu, the number of Internet users exceeded 18.72 million at the end of last year. In the view of Chen Zhi, a researcher, “What we can do is to continuously research and develop communication technology and contribute Chengdu’s strength to the construction of network civilization.”

“Although the Internet is a virtual space, with the rapid development of the Internet, it actually affects the ecology of society. Cyberspace has become a part of civilized society.” Wang Jinkang, a famous science fiction writer, believes that the Internet is rooted in modern science, communication technology, artificial intelligence technology and other technologies, “Therefore, technology and network civilization are inseparable.” Wang Jinkang believes that Chengdu is China’s science fiction capital. For Chengdu, it can rely on the text, film and television on the Internet to spread positive ideas, “Let technology further promote the construction and development of network civilization.”

This year, the 144-hour transit visa exemption has brought a tourism boom to various parts of the country, “hard-controlled” many foreign tourists, “China Travel” has become popular on global social media, and the mysterious and long-standing Sichuan culture has made Chengdu one of the preferred destinations for many foreigners.

He Sirui is a Chinese-Swedish girl who loves traditional culture. On the stage of “Future Night”, she performed a wonderful Sichuan Opera face-changing. “I often share my daily ‘practice’ on social platforms at home and abroad, hoping to show the Sichuan Opera culture and Chengdu cuisine to the world through my videos. When I see foreign netizens say that Sichuan Opera is ‘cool’ and ‘fashionable’, I feel proud from the bottom of my heart.”

Traditional culture has formed a “clear stream” in online communication, which is also the result of the combination of culture and modern technology. In He Sirui’s view, Sichuan culture has strong vitality and great potential for online communication. “I love Sichuan Opera and Chengdu cuisine. I want to bring traditional culture to every corner of the world through my own recording and dissemination of Sichuan culture. I also look forward to further promoting the construction of online civilization through my own efforts.”
